1. Scott Patron eRide 2022: Nailing it or off the track?

It is well known that there is sometimes only a fine line between genius and madness. Okay, maybe the contrasts aren’t that extreme in this case. However, opinion will differ on the new Patron eRide from Scott. The manufacturer has done something that, in the eyes of some of you, might be close to breaking a taboo – the damper of this full-suspension e-mountain bike is completely integrated into the frame.

“Unusual” may be one of the most neutral words that come to mind when you see something like this. It certainly has a different effect. Usually, the shock is one of the elements that mountain bikers want and need to get to more often. The suspension needs regular care and maintenance. In addition, many models offer various adjustment options, so that the trial and play factor should not be forgotten.

The somewhat more complex mud flap

With integration, many a reach for the shock can of course potentially be left out. Even though the element is certainly not completely vacuum-protected in the frame, it is estimated that most of the dirt will pass it by due to the unusual design. And after a muddy ride, it could be a relief for many to save some time in the future when cleaning afterwards.

At the same time, the visual impact of a shock on many mountain bikes cannot be denied. Its construction alone – whether with an air chamber or a coil spring – makes many a technology-loving heart beat faster. Made of different metals, it literally adds an extra shine to the bike. Often, the area is also accentuated by the surrounding paintwork.

Interestingly, design is one of the decisive reasons why Scott took the step of integrating the Patron eRide. According to the manufacturer, the unconventional approach creates crucial space for other elements. This refers primarily to the motor, battery and space for attaching a water bottle to the down tube. The latter is almost considered a luxury on an e-fully like this.

The central question

The bottom line, however, is that there is only one decisive indicator when rating this feature: Does the integrated damper work at least as well as an ordinary one? Only the riding experience can provide the final answer. In our case, that has yet to happen. From a distance, however, the signs are very good. Scott gives the Patron eRide 160 millimetres of rear triangle travel. There is the same amount at the front. This puts us right in the middle between the trail and enduro segments.

Although the shock is structurally separate, it is functionally fully connected. With the help of Scott’s TwinLoc system, the characteristics of the suspension and the geometry of the bike can be changed at the touch of a button on the remote control from the handlebar. The decisive factor is the terrain in which you are currently riding or the riding situation, i.e. uphill, downhill or on more level sections.

Special air cooling for the motor

The integrated rear suspension results in an apparently unique position of the motor in the frame. Scott has positioned the motor vertically and rotated it by 46 degrees. In this position it is supported from below. The upper part of the motor is exposed. Heat generated while riding can thus escape upwards, similar to the suction inside a chimney. At the same time, holes in the motor cover support the heat exchange.

The large gap between the bottom bracket and the floor is striking. It is quite possible that this is also related to the motor arrangement. That looks like a lot of space. Especially on technically demanding rides through extremely blocky terrain, this should prove to be an advantage.

Inventive work on details

With regard to the integration of the battery integrated in the down tube, Scott once again resorts to its own solution. The frame of the completely new model is made of carbon. To prevent the battery from damaging the frame walls, the manufacturer has simply fitted a second tube into the frame tube. The PowerTube 750 Bosch is inserted into it. This is supposed to work smoothly. It certainly sounds tidy.

The cockpit appears to be similarly clean. All cables emerge from the frame just below the handlebars. The handlebar itself merges with the stem to form a one-piece combination, the Synchros Hixon ic SL.

As a kind of hidden gimmick, there is a light cable laid in the frame as a precaution. It is intended for operating a front headlight on the handlebar. The cable already has the necessary plug connection. The light is later powered by the ebike’s battery. The standard equipment, on the other hand, already includes two small LED lights on the struts of the rear triangle. The same applies to two small mudguards for front and rear. These have been produced exclusively for the Patron eRide.

Versatile overall package

In general, Scott pays quite a lot of attention to the topic of suitability for everyday use on this ebike. It is quite rare that accessories such as bike stands, larger mudguards for the rear, rear carriers or camera mounts can be mounted on a full-fledged trail e-mountain bike via mounts on the frame.

The rest of the bike’s story is quickly told. The Patron is a complete novelty in the Scott range. It comes between the Ransom eRide, which is clearly designed for enduro, and the classic Strike eRide trail ebike. And to really make an impression, it is of course equipped with the latest drive from Bosch, the Bosch Smart System. All suspension elements as well as brakes and shifting components are installed in the gradations “really tasty” to “absolutely reliable”, depending on the model.

We would like to honorably mention that in addition to the five models of the Patron eRide, two versions of the Contessa Patron eRide are coming onto the market at the same time. All of the aforementioned applies to them to the same extent. Therefore, it is not worth repeating at this point. The only exception is the reference to smaller details with which the Contessa models are specially tailored to the requirements of female e-bikers. These include the length of the cranks or the choice of saddles. And the electronic shifting is withheld from the fair women – for us, the only move by Scott that we can’t really understand.

According to Scott, the Patron eRide will be available as both the Scott Patron eRide and the Contessa Patron eRide in online shops and stores from November 2021.

Original post 1st September 2021

Scott is starting the 2022 season rather comfortably, both in terms of the number and type of new products. Based on previous experience, this rather suggests that the Swiss-based company still has one or two aces up its sleeve and wants to play them out later. So, if you don’t find the e-bike of your dreams right away, it might well be worth the wait in this case.

2. Scott Axis eRide Evo: Soft becomes hard

All those who are more familiar with the manufacturer have so far saved the Axis eRide Evo as a full-suspension SUV e-bike. This file must be overwritten with the new season. The suspended rear triangle has apparently been lost. Previously always designed by Scott as a kind of hybrid, the emphasis is now clearly shifting towards an urban long-distance bike. This is also signalled by the addition of the name “Tour” to two of the new models.

The main reason for this conceptual change was probably the integration of the new Bosch drive with the larger battery capacity. In addition, the robust, enduring Linkgllide groupset from Shimano was used. What remains is a fully equipped bike that cuts a fine figure both in the city and on rides off the beaten track. The G-One Allround tyres from Schwalbe, for example, are emblematic of this compromise. The tyres have an enormously wide range of uses and are therefore an excellent match for the new Axis eRide Evo. Especially in the 57 millimetre width used here.

You get eight millimetres more with the Axis eRide Evo Men from Scott. In return, however, with the “Tour” addition, mudguards, rear carrier, lights and side stand are also omitted. The result is a sporty hardtail on 29-inch tyres, with 120 millimetres of suspension travel and a 12-speed cassette.

3. Scott Sub eRide Evo: Commuting becomes even more pleasant

In the product line of Axis eRide models, Scott continues to keep bikes in the range that are based on the previous standard Bosch drive. This approach is continued in the group of Sub eRide bikes. In itself, this strategy makes perfect sense. The manufacturer naturally wants to be able to offer the latest Bosch technology in one of the most popular product lines. At the same time, it would be an exaggeration to completely overturn the entire range.

So, Scott is entering the 2022 season in this segment with two new products. In addition to the Bosch update, these also offer Shimano’s Linkglide groupset. Otherwise, the manufacturer has changed details. Thanks to a new stem, all cables are now routed completely inside the frame. This leaves a very clear design and allows the lines of the frame to stand out in their purest form. The very high chain stay, for example, stands out correspondingly clearly. It adds stability to the frame of the bike. According to Scott, the frame geometry is designed for an active and comfortable riding position. For a bike that is strongly intended for commuting in an urban environment, this is certainly a fitting approach.

In regard to the rest of the equipment, a comparison with the Sub Sport eRide comes to mind. In terms of level, it is most similar to the Sub Sport, although the Sub eRide Evo can be classified slightly above it. The only downer is that the newcomer for 2022 unfortunately does not have a low-step version.
