Giant EnergyPak Plus – Easy to Mount and Versatile in Use

Ebike with charging port suitable with EnergyPak Plus range extender battery

Since 2020, Giant has been offering a smaller additional battery with the range extender called EnergyPak Plus. With it, you can easily expand the capacity of your Giant or Liv ebike and increase the range of the system.

In addition to the different main batteries, the EnergyPaks from Giant, 250 watt hours are added. This adds up to the following maximum outputs:

  • 500 Wh EnergyPak + 250 Wh EnergyPak Plus = 750 Wh total capacity
  • 625 Wh EnergyPak + 250 Wh EnergyPak Plus = 875 Wh total capacity

Access only if needed

The EnergyPak Plus weighs approximately 1.8 kilograms. It is attached to the down tube of the frame via a separate mounting plate. Its extra energy comes into play as soon as the main battery reaches a critical level. Giant has solved the logic of accessing two batteries on one ebike as follows: First, the system always accesses the main battery. If the energy level there tends towards zero, the system automatically switches to the range extender and subsequently draws its energy from there. This continues until the reserve of the range extender is completely used up. The battery management system then switches back to the main battery and uses up the remaining energy. When this is also consumed, you can only continue driving with your own muscle power.

At the beginning of a riding session, it is advisable to switch on the EnergyPak Plus by pressing the corresponding button directly on the device. This puts the system on standby. However, energy is only drawn from it as soon as the main battery has approximately less than five percent capacity remaining.

Important to know: You cannot use the range extender on every Giant and Liv ebike. Compatible models can be recognised by the fact that there is another opening in the down tube above and below the mount for the bottle cage. On the bikes that are not suitable, the charge port also looks different.

Mounting the EnergyPak

As mentioned above, you attach the EnergyPak Plus to the ebike using a separate base plate. To mount the plate, first remove the battery from the bike. Then press the two rubber plugs out of the mounting holes for the EnergyPak Plus from the inside. Then insert a mounting nut for the mounting plate through one of the holes from the inside, hold it with one finger, place the mounting plate on the nut from the outside, place a mounting screw for the mounting plate on it from the outside and screw it on loosely. Repeat the same for the other hole. Finally, tighten both screws with a torque of 4 Nm.

The rest of the assembly is definitely quicker. Now insert the battery on the mounting plate – first with the lower end, then with the upper end. Both are seated correctly when they click into place. At the top of the right side of the EnergyPak Plus is a small retaining lever. Now close it and tighten it with a Torx25 wrench to a torque of 2 Nm to 4 Nm. Then you only need to connect the connector plug of the EnergyPak Plus to the charging port of the ebike.

Using the battery and bottle cage at the same time?

In regard to the mounting of the retaining plate, the question naturally arises as to how the bottle cage and the EnergyPak Plus actually get along with each other. The answer is clear: If the additional battery is mounted, no bottle cage can be attached at this point. As soon as you remove the battery, this changes immediately. The retaining plate allows you to attach a bottle cage at the same time via an adapter.

Charging as usual

The EnergyPak Plus can be charged like a normal EnergyPak. That means you have two options: Either the range extender is mounted on the bike or you take it off. In either case, you must connect the connector plug with the adapter cable supplied. This establishes the correct connection to the charger. When the EnergyPak Plus is completely discharged, the charging process takes a little more than three hours.

By the way, the additional battery not only increases your range. You also get a power bank on your ebike. The EnergyPak Plus has a USB connection at the bottom. This can be very useful on the road, for example when your smartphone urgently needs additional energy.

  1. Just found this. Any chance there is a mount option without the full package? Have 2 giants and just need to switch the Energypak between them

    1. Hello George,
Actually, we don’t know very much about this bike since it is only sold in North America and not in Europe. But from the pictures of the Momentum website it is obvious, that the additional mounts for installing the range extender on the down tube are missing. So, we would guess that is not compatible with your ebike.
      Cheers, Matthias

  2. Hi, I have had an extender pack for over a year for my Giant fast road E-bike pro and suddenly it seems to have stopped communicating with the main battery so it doesn’t kick in when the main battery is being run down. Any help greatly appreciated.

    1. Hello Hendrika,
If you are riding a model from 2021 or 2022, the frame unfortunately does not provide enough space for the Range Extender. Giant is expected to change this for its 2023 model.
      Cheers, Matthias

    1. Hello Julie,
For the 2022 season models this is no option. The frames lack the neccessary mounts.

      Cheers,
      Matthias

        1. Hello Ade,
I am not quite sure, to whose comment you refer to but yes, all Fathom E+ models as well as the Fathom E+ EX models do have such mounts.

          Cheers,
          Matthias

      1. Putting aside the fact that the Stance E does not have the necessary mounts on the frame, is everything else compatible i.e.: if there were a different way of mounting the range extender on the Stance E bike, would it work?

        1. Hello Carlos,
No, apart from the mounts, there is another, decisive factor. All Range Extender compatible bikes have a new charging port mounted on the frame including the corresponding cable harness. This is 7-pin, non-compatible bikes are 5-pin. The additional two pins are used for communication between the range extender and the main battery.
          Cheers, Matthias
