The 30th anniversary of Flyer will not actually take place until next year. However, the pioneer of the scene apparently cannot wait any longer. With an anniversary model, the Flyer G1 Gotour, it is already ringing in the upcoming celebrations. But we are still in the here and now. And the present of Flyer certainly does not have to hide from the glorious stories of the past.

As early as 2023, the manufacturer demonstrated that it continues to play a pioneering role in the industry. Its Goroc TR:X was one of the selected bikes that showcased one of the outstanding highlights of the Eurobike trade fair in Frankfurt am Main at the time – the Pinion Motor-Gear-Unit. Flyer had been working behind the scenes on its development for several years. The Swiss company is now using this head start to expand its range with two more ebikes featuring the MGU.

1. Flyer Upstreet TR:CF

The first model is a well-thought-out ebike for commuters. The Flyer Upstreet TR:CF combines the virtually maintenance-free Pinion drive with the Gates belt drive. Both are said to have the same qualities. If everything works as intended, the MGU only needs a ten-minute oil change after 10,000 kilometres. Depending on the version, the belt can last twice as long. This means that you basically only have to worry about the tyres, the brakes and charging the battery. The battery provides a capacity of 700 watt hours. Therefore, it will take a while before you have to connect it to a charger for the first time.

Pinions MGU will hardly cost you any leisure time. What’s more, it has the potential to fill every hour you spend with it with the most comfortable cycling. After all, the motor not only drives you powerfully and smoothly, but does so at the cadence at which you feel most at ease. With the help of the new automatic shifting system, you can set this. Depending on the riding situation, the drive then automatically selects the optimal gear – even under full load. And thanks to the Start.Select function, you always start in the gear ratio you have previously set. Especially when commuting over longer distances, such functions ensure that you arrive relaxed.

Longer distances even more enjoyable

Flyer has packed the high-quality technology into an equally high-quality frame. Carbon. Clear lines. A shiny silver or a matt dark green as colour options. It looks unexcited, timeless and very convincing in its simplicity. In addition, the Flyer Upstreet TR:CF, featuring 29-inch wheels, a suspension fork, a suspension dropper seatpost and 2.5-inch tyres, comes with components that perfectly round off the long-distance concept. The rear rack, which is approved for loads of up to 27 kilograms, should not go unmentioned.

If there is anything missing, it is perhaps a smaller frame size and alternative frame shapes. The Flyer Upstreet TR:CF is only available in shops with a diamond frame in sizes M, L and XL. A second bottle cage mount on the frame would also have been an advantage. As compensation, an Abus folding lock is included as standard, which has found its place on the rear mudguard.

Flyer is asking 7,999 euros for its new flagship commuter. As a speed pedelec with motor assistance up to 45 kilometres per hour, it costs 8,499 euros.

2. Flyer Goroc TR

With the new Goroc TR, Flyer has put together a second, very similar no-worries package. Compared to the luxury commuter Upstreet TR:CF, however, it is a little more sporty. The manufacturer has once again used the Mobie34 Air from SR Suntour as the suspension fork. However, here it provides you with 100 millimetres of travel. Together with the 60-millimetre wide Schwalbe Johnny Watts, this is a combination that will allow you to take on many a challenge off-road in a relaxed manner. Admittedly, if the ground is too loose and obstacles such as stones, roots and drops become too nasty, the Goroc TR may take its limits. Until then, however, you can count on a reliable hardtail e-mountain bike that seems very capable.

In any case, you don’t need to worry about the weather or the condition of the trails. After all, the Pinion MGU has both the motor and the gearbox inside the frame. This means that they are optimally protected from all kinds of dirt and, secondly, they usually survive a fall unscathed. The same applies to the Gates carbon belt combined with the drive.

Flyer relies on the nine-speed unit on the Goroc TR. With its range of 568 per cent, it outshines the majority of other gear systems. And we’re not even talking about the top model from Pinion.

Diverse and versatile

The price being 2,000 euros cheaper than the Upstreet TR:CF, is partly explained by the frame material. Instead of carbon, the Goroc TR uses the cheaper aluminium. Flyer describes the seating position as rather upright. You can test whether this is true with three frame shapes. You can choose from the Gents diamond frame, the Mixed trapezoid frame and the Comfort low-step frame. Depending on the frame shape, the frame sizes vary between S, M, L and XL. In addition, you only have to choose between a matt white and a matt black colour. The ebikes are equipped the same for all three frame shapes.

In addition to the dropper seat post, the large battery integrated into the down tube with a capacity of 800 watt hours is also eye-catching. Unfortunately, it can only be removed downwards, which can be a bit fiddly. But perhaps you will be reconciled by the fact that Flyer has approved the new Goroc TR for use with a bicycle trailer. This way, you could take your offspring with you on your tours, even if they can’t yet ride a bike themselves.

3. Flyer Gotour EL

The Gotour was the latest of Flyer’s touring ebikes to make the headlines. However, it was presented two years ago. Therefore, a new model in this core segment of the manufacturer was to be expected. The only question was in which price range the portfolio would be expanded.

Well, Flyer has taken on the entry-level segment. The Flyer Gotour EL starts at 3,999 euros. That makes it around 1,200 euros cheaper than the cheapest Flyer Gotour, which remains the undisputed leader of this ebike type in the Flyer range.

The Gotour EL is a very specifically tailored ebike. It is only available as a low-step model. Its aluminium frame starts at size XS and goes up through S and M to L. This means that it is suitable for people of very different heights. This clearly indicates that Flyer does not consider this bike to be a model that is explicitly aimed at women or men, but rather at all genders equally. The range of colours on offer supports this theory. Although it is extremely limited to just two colours, the dark green called Jasper Green Gloss and the white called Pearl White Gloss do answer the basic colour question: Do I prefer a darker or a lighter colour for my bike?

Riding comfortably

Let’s stay with the “fit” of the Gotour EL for a moment. An adjustable stem makes it easier for you to find the optimal seating position. With a slightly more pointed angle, you can achieve a slightly more stretched upper body and thus react if, for example, your upper body tends to be longer than your legs. A larger angle allows you to sit more upright and, in turn, compensates for a relatively short upper body. Thanks to the saddle clamp with quick-release, you can adjust the saddle height without tools in just a few seconds.

The drive system is the latest Bosch Performance Line, i.e. the Smart System. This means low noise levels, a torque of 75 Newton metres and a peak power of 550 watts, even at cadences as low as 70 rpm. A good decision for a trekking ebike and a logical choice for an entry-level model. The removable intube battery comes with a capacity of 625 watt hours. Flyer uses the wireless Bosch Intuvia 100 display.

Which gear system should you choose?

While the e-drive is standardised, the rest of the equipment in the model series differs at key points. With the Gotour EL 3.40, the Gotour EL 3.20 and the Gotour EL 3.12 XC, you can choose between three concepts. The primary question is which drive best suits your requirements. The Gotour EL 3.12 XC is equipped with a 9-speed Shimano derailleur. Flyer has also installed 27.5-inch wheels here. These are fitted with Schwalbe G-One Allround tyres, which are ideal for the balancing act between road and forest track.

The wheels on the Gotour EL 3.40 and Gotour EL 3.20 are both 29 inches in diameter. The first model features a Shimano 5-speed hub gear system, while the second is equipped with an Enviolo stepless hub gear system to help you move forward. Both models are combined with a conventional bicycle chain and not with a belt drive.

Distribute the load well

When it comes to the options for transporting luggage, the picture is again an uniform one. You can load the rear rack with a maximum of 25 kilograms. It almost goes without saying that it has additional side struts to which you can attach panniers on the left and right. A practical extra, on the other hand, is the compatibility of the carrier with the “MonkeyLoad” system. An optionally available adapter allows you to attach baskets and bags using a click system. In addition, Flyer offers an optional front rack for the Gotour EL. This can carry loads of up to ten kilograms.

4. Anniversary model Flyer G1 Gotour

The approaching 30th anniversary of Flyer has already been mentioned. The first special model, the Flyer G1 Gotour, holds a reason for you to celebrate as well. The manufacturer uses the current Gotour as a basis, changes its equipment a little and lets the price drop significantly below the level of the series model. This way you can save 500 euros or more.

There will be a total of five different equipment variants of the G1 Gotour. These combine the standard ebike system consisting of the Bosch Performance Line CX motor, the LED Remote combined with the Intuvia 100 for operation and the 750 watt-hour Bosch PowerTube 750 battery. This puts the ebike drive on this ebike at the top level.

Sporty entry

When it comes to the other features, there are some major differences. Each bike has a slightly different character, with some being more geared towards riding on asphalt and others being more suitable for off-road riding. For 4,499 euros, the Flyer G1 Gotour 5.12 CX is the bike that is best suited to riding on forest and meadow trails. Its suspension fork has the largest travel at 80 millimetres. The ten gears of the derailleur cover a gear bandwidth of over 430 per cent, which none of the other installed gear systems can match. And the Schwalbe Smart Sam is a tyre with wide but flatter studs that ensures good traction on changing surfaces. The Flyer G1 Gotour 5.12 CX is the only one of the special models that is available not only with the comfort frame with low step-through, but also with a diamond frame, which Flyer calls “Gents”.

Stepless gear shifting on the top model

The top model in the range, the Flyer G1 Gotour 5.23 CX, is only available as a low-step model. In terms of its technical features, it is the closest to the Flyer G1 Gotour 5.12 CX. The manufacturer has chosen the same tyres and a suspension fork with 75 millimetres of travel, which is almost the same as the entry-level model. The reason for the price of 4,999 euros for the Flyer G1 Gotour 5.23 CX is the decision to use a different gear system. The stepless hub gear system from Enviolo is used. Due to the lack of separately defined gear ratios as fixed gears, you can use every percent of the gear bandwidth with this system. At 380 percent, this is slightly less than a Shimano derailleur gear system. However, many people appreciate this special shifting experience, especially as Flyer combines it with a virtually maintenance-free belt drive.

A cheaper alternative for hub gears

The Flyer G1 Gotour 5.43 CX, the Flyer G1 Gotour 5.43 Comfort NL CX and the Flyer G1 Gotour 5.43 Comfort CX are positioned between the Flyer G1 Gotour 5.23 CX and the Flyer G1 Gotour 5.23 CX. This applies at least to their price, which is 4,799 euros. The manufacturer uses the widely available Shimano Nexus hub gear system with five gears. Its gear ratio range of around 260 per cent means that there are certain limitations when it comes to finding the right gear for the respective riding situation. On the flat and on slightly hilly terrain, this is certainly less of a problem than on more mountainous routes. However, the Bosch Performance Line CX in the rear wheel is one of the most powerful motors on the market. The models with the suffix “Comfort” in their name are equipped with a stem that can be adjusted in angle. This gives you more freedom to find the most comfortable seating position. However, the fork’s travel is reduced to 60 millimetres.

All anniversary models are available in limited numbers. So first celebrate, first served applies here. 😉
