New Ebikes from Bergamont for 2023: A Brisk Coming and Going

New ebikes from Bergamont for the 2023 season

Update 7th March 2023

As the first ebike manufacturer in Germany, Bergamont recently introduced an ebike that incorporates TQ’s HPR50. It is fitting that the E-Vitess is a model that is completely new to the electrified part of Bergamont’s range. Unlike most other ebikes currently equipped with the very light and compact mid-mounted motor, the E-Vitess is designed for people who are looking more for a reliable everyday bike and place less emphasis on sporty use on or off the road. You can find out all the details about one of Bergamont’s most technically exciting new launches for the 2023 season here.

Original post 22nd July 2022

Traditionally, Bergamont equips the majority of its ebikes with Bosch systems. Only on selected models can you find a different drive. In the past, the Shimano-based Paul-E folding bike and the E-Grandurance gravel bike with the Fazua Evation were two of the few exceptions. For the 2023 season, Bergamont has said goodbye to Fazua. The resulting gap in the primarily sporty ebikes is now filled by the X35+ rear hub motor from Mahle. This and the updates to the Bosch drives are two of the major points the manufacturer has been working on in its range for the coming season.

1. Bergamont E-Sweep: Speeding through the city

From the outside, the first completely new bike for 2023 is clearly surprising. The E-Sweep would basically be as if painted for the integration of a slim mid-motor like the Ride 50 or Ride 60 from Fazua. But for the time being, the cooperation with Bergamont is coming to an end, so a replacement was necessary. The Hanseatic company found a replacement in Mahle. Their motors for the rear wheel have become increasingly popular over the past two years. Bergamont decided on the X35+ for the new bike. The unit has a torque of 40 Newton metres. Theoretically, the alternative could have been the somewhat lighter X20 with 23 Newton metres. However, it has only been on the market since this year and may still have to prove its stability.

The concept of the E-Sweep is a bit of a reminiscence of the E-Grandurance gravel model. Instead of drop bars, there are now flat bars. It looks like a bike that would have been called a fitness bike in the past. With the difference that the E-Sweep comes complete with mudguards, lights and rear carrier.

Minimal differences within the model range

For the time being, Bergamont has produced two versions of the model: the E-Sweep Tour and the E-Sweep Sport. In terms of equipment, they are almost identical. The only difference is the installed rear derailleur with a single chainring. The Tour has ten gears, while the Sport only has eight.

2. Bergamont Hans-E and Bergamont Hans-E LT: Small ones with great potential

Bergamont is breaking new ground with a compact bike. Indeed, niche products are a field in which the manufacturer feels quite at home, as shown by the foldable Paul-E, for example. However, a compact bike has never appeared in the last few catalogues.

Despite its smaller size, the Hans-E is unlikely to be overlooked, just like its slightly larger brother, the Hans-E LT. Its exterior is simply too striking for that. Edgy yet dynamic lines characterise their frames. Bergamont combines a massive down tube with a sloping top tube that appears almost fragilely thin, at least from the side. The motor is presented quite openly. As a dark cube, it determines the look of the lower part of the bikes.

Almost the same names, but different concepts

Thanks to the low step-in, you should be able to get on both the Hans-E and the Hans-E LT quite comfortably. LT stands for longtail, i.e. a longer rear triangle, which also results in a longer wheelbase. This version somewhat resembles a small cargo bike. Especially since its maximum permissible total weight is 160 kilograms. Unfortunately, the information currently available to us does not tell us how much you can load the respective rear carriers. What is clear, however, is that you can park both models upright so that they rest on the end of the rear carrier. This option is now offered by more and more cargo bikes and compact bikes.

Overall, the Hans-E leaves a positive impression on us because it simply has a fresh and unspent look. Another great feature is that the motorisation is state-of-the-art with the Bosch Smart System. The Hans-E LT also scores with its reliable 5-speed Shimano Nexus hub gears and the suspension fork with its 80 millimetres of travel. The Hans E, on the other hand, saves weight with its rigid fork, while the ten gears of its derailleur ensure that you can make good speed on the small 20-inch wheels.

Both the Hans-E and the Hans-E LT come in only one frame size. However, thanks to the standard Speedlifter, you can quickly find the handlebar height that suits you.

3. Introduction of the Smart System among e-cargo bikes

Bergamont E-Cargoville LJ

In the case of the e-cargo bikes, Bergamont has mainly taken care of the drive technology. All models of the E-Cargoville LJ feature the Performance Line CX Cargo just introduced by Bosch. Technically speaking, this is basically the previous version of the motor. Now supplemented by the ability to communicate with the other smart components. In the “Elite” and “Expert” versions, you will find the combination with Bosch’s PowerTube 750 battery or PowerTube 625 and the Kiox 300 as the associated display. In the “Edition” version we are talking about the PowerTube 500 and the simpler Intuvia 100 display.

Bergamont E-Cargoville Bakery

A comparable two-class society prevails with the E-Cargoville Bakery. The top model has the PowerTube 625 and Kiox 300, while the “Expert” version comes with the PowerTube 500 and Intuvia 100 at a lower price. As already mentioned, the switch to the Cargo Line motor has also been made here, which has now been raised to the level of the Smart System. If you are only marginally interested in such technical details, you might be pleased with the striking dark red colour with the sonorous name “Shiny Candy Red” that Bergamont has treated the E-Cargoville Bakery Elite to.

There are no changes to report with regard to the E-Cargoville LT. Here, everything remains the same.

4. Bergamont E-Trailster: Sportsman and tourer combined

A new face adorns Bergamont’s flagship when it comes to e-mountain bikes. New name. New frame. New wheel concept. The Bergamont E-Trailster 150 Elite is intended to provide a breath of fresh air in this segment. The newcomer is aimed at the all-mountain category, which the bike falls into due to its suspension travel of 150 millimetres at the fork and 140 millimetres at the rear triangle. That is ten millimetres less than the direct predecessor models. In addition, the manufacturer switches from the 29-inch wheels to the mixed-wheel version with the 29-inch wheel at the front and the smaller 27.5-inch wheel at the rear. The aluminium frame is approved for a maximum total weight of 160 kilograms. This means that even taller people can carry more luggage on their tours without hesitation.

Bergamont E-Trailster 150 Elite

Basically, there are two bikes in this model series. The classification in the Allmountain category refers only to the E-Trailster 150 Elite and the E-Trailster 150 Expert. In addition, there are three other models: the E-Trailster 130 Pro, the E-Trailster 130 Adventure and the E-Trailster 130 Tour. You can already tell from their names that the suspension travel is less at the front and rear. Exactly 20 millimetres in each case. In addition, the differently sized wheels make way for a uniform 29 inch size. Much more obvious, however, are the rear carrier with the integrated mudguard and the small mudguard on the front wheel.

With panniers on the black route?

Looking at this, we ask ourselves what exactly Bergamont is after with these bikes? After all, the manufacturer has not made them into SUV ebikes. Lighting and side stands are missing. Who likes to ride such a bike off-road in a sporty manner and seriously wants a permanently installed rear carrier? It will be exciting to see how these three Trailsters are received by customers.

5. Bergamont E-Revox: New drive system and more choices

There is considerably less movement among the hardtails. Analogous to other ebike types, Bergamont has concentrated here on raising the models to the Smart System platform. With a total of five equipment variants, this is still quite extensive. The result is a correspondingly wide range that also opens up many options in terms of price. You can choose between bikes with the Performance Line CX motor, opt for the Kiox 300 display or the Intuvia 100 and at the same time look for batteries with different capacities. In terms of orientation, this was even easier last year. At that time, the addition “Premium” indicated that a bike was equipped with the Bosch Smart System. With the expansion of this development level to include further components, this addition has been dropped again. Instead, you have to work your way through “Elite”, “Expert”, “Pro”, “Sport” and “Edition”. With “Sport” you will come across an equipment variant that is somewhat cheaper and comes without a display as standard.

6. Bergamont E-Horizon FS: When it’s ok to ride bumpy tours

With some of the models in the E-Trailster range, Bergamont has confused us a little, at least. This is also due to the fact that two models appear among the full-suspension SUV ebikes that are very close to the E-Trailster. No wonder, since all these bikes are based on the same frame. The E-Horizon FS Elite and E-Horizon FS Expert have slightly smaller wheels and their gears are one or two gears lower. Apart from that, however, the similarity is remarkable.

Bergamont E-Horizon FS Expert

Which approach works better will again be decided solely by your requirements. With proper mudguards, a side stand and a complete lighting system, the E-Horizon FS Elite and E-Horizon FS Expert should be more versatile.

The futuristic-looking rear carrier will probably determine whether one of the models mentioned above might work for you. Its support surface slopes noticeably towards the seat tube. This automatically raises the question of what happens to the luggage you attach to it? At least until you have taken a seat on the ebike, it will slide towards the seat post. It is therefore advisable to have additional straps or similar with you. The top edge of the rear carrier is very high above the rear wheel. This creates the necessary space to attach large panniers to the rack.

If you dare to ride one of the bikes, you will at least get high-quality equipment. In addition to the Smart System drive with Performance Line CX motor, PowerTube 625 and Kiox 300 display, Shimano’s robust Linkglide shifting group is part of the equipment.

The E-Horizon FS Edition, on the other hand, has remained unchanged.

7. Bergamont E-Horizon: Old and new side by side

Anyone keeping track of Bergamont’s trekking ebikes should ask himself or herself if they don’t feel called to higher things. The manufacturer offers a whopping 16 equipment variants for the 2023 season. That almost deserves a separate essay. Thirteen variants are equipped with the Bosch Smart System. Whether derailleur gears or hub gears, drive by chain or belt, Performance Line CX with a maximum torque of 85 Newton metres or Performance Line with 75 Newton metres, batteries with a capacity of 750 watt hours down to 500 watt hours, Kiox display or Intuvia display – all this is possible. To make the selection easier, we have created a rudimentary overview.

Models with Bosch Smart System:

  • E-Horizon Edition: Performance Line, PowerTube 750, Intuvia 100
  • E-Horizon Edition 6: Performance Line, PowerTube 625, Intuvia 100

8. Bergamont E-Ville: The feel-good programme

With its low-step models from the E-Ville range, Bergamont switches completely to the Smart System drive as well. The three versions E-Ville Pro Belt, E-Ville Expert and E-Ville Edition with their Schwalbe Marathon E-Plus tyres are suitable for urban riding. E-Ville SUV Elite and E-Ville SUV Tour with Schwalbe Marathon E-Plus MTB or Schwalbe Smart Sam tyres offer additional reliable grip when the ground becomes loose, bumpy or slippery.

The E-Ville Edition with the Performance Line CX motor, the new Intuvia 100 display and a PowerTube 500, which is also new and has a slightly lower capacity, offers the most affordable entry into the otherwise quite comfortable model range. In the other models, both the CX motor and the larger battery with 625 watt hours are standard. In the E-Ville, which Bergamont combines with a derailleur in addition to the suspension forks with 100 millimetres of travel, the comfort note takes on a distinctly sporty twist.
