Bosch will cooperate with the Taiwanese brake specialist Tektro in the future. This was announced by the Reutlingen-based company in a corresponding press release. Through the cooperation, the drive manufacturer wants to expand the market penetration of its ABS for ebikes, which was revised last year.
“We are firmly convinced that eBike ABS will become established in all eBike types in the long term and will become the standard for high-quality eBikes,” explains Claus Fleischer, business manager of Bosch eBike Systems. “With Tektro, we are now working with another renowned brake manufacturer alongside Magura, who is particularly concerned about the safety of eBikers.”
New options for ebike manufacturers
The partnership gives ebike manufacturers more freedom of choice when equipping their bikes. Until now, anyone who wanted to equip a model with Bosch ABS had to choose a Magura model for the brakes. Other manufacturers did not have approval for the system. This has now changed fundamentally as a result of the announcement.
According to Bosch, the ABS was specifically adapted to the Tektro braking systems to ensure optimum performance. As a result, the identical range of configurations could be implemented. As with the combination of Bosch with Magura, bicycle manufacturers can now choose from the following four set-ups for the combination of Bosch with Tektro:
- ABS Cargo
- ABS Touring
- ABS Allroad
- ABS Trail
Depending on the type of ebike for which the ABS is intended, the appropriate configuration is used.
Beyond own company borders
Compared to the competitor Blubrake and its ABS for ebikes, the now announced partnership with Tektro has an important strategic significance for Bosch. As an open system, Blubrake has always offered bicycle manufacturers a free choice of braking system. Bosch, on the other hand, was locked into Magura. Since 2019, both companies have been operating under the joint name “Magura Bosch Parts & Services” (MBPS) and each holds 50 percent of the joint venture. Now Bosch is at least opening up a little more, especially since the cooperation with Tektro also includes its sporty brand Tektro Racing Parts TRP. TRP has a larger market share in the e-mountain bike segment.
For Tektro, on the other hand, the step is part of its more extensive involvement in the field of ebikes. For about a year, the company has been on the market with E-Drive 9, its own drive group for ebikes. Numerous renowned ebike brands such as Riese & Müller, Trek, Giant, Bergamont and KTM have been using the manufacturer’s various hydraulic disc brakes for a long time. Currently widely used are for example:
- Tektro HD-M745
- Tektro HD-E740
- Tektro HD-EU 817
- Tektro HD-T737
Ebikes with Bosch and Tektro ABS are expected to appear on the market from Q3 2023.
