New Moustache Dimanche: A Duo for Every Surface

Moustache is always good for a surprise. The French manufacturer’s ebikes always have their very own flavour, be it in terms of design, the materials used or special technical solutions. If you want to see this for yourself, just take a look at the new Dimanche from Moustache. It once again contains some remarkably creative ideas. As in the past, however, they are hidden in a jumble of models. This offers enormous variety, but also harbours the danger of getting lost.

To prevent this from happening to us, let’s break the whole thing down carefully. Even the introduction should correctly count for the plural of ‘the new Dimanche’. After all, there have been two different approaches under this name to date. The Dimanche 28 was an E-road bike, while the Dimanche 29 is aimed at fans of gravel and bikepacking. Moustache is still sticking to this categorisation. If you are only interested in one of the ebike types, you can turn your thoughts in the appropriate direction here – either to the Moustache Dimanche 28 Road or the Moustache Dimanche 29 Gravel. A small side note: The numbers 28 and 29 after the names of the model series suggest that they are based on wheels of different sizes. This is not the case. In both cases we are talking about rims and tyres of size 700C, i.e. 28 inches.

Unusually large selection

Before we delve deeper into the breakdown of the models, let’s look at what they have in common. The reference to the wheel sizes used already indicates that the two newcomers are based on identical, completely redesigned aluminium frames. And following its guidelines from previous years, Moustache produces two different versions of these. This makes it one of the few manufacturers where you can buy an E-road bike or an E-gravel bike with a trapezoidal frame. The diamond frame is a given anyway. And depending on the model, both frame shapes are also available alternately with flat handlebars or drop bars.

With different stem lengths, Moustache takes into account the differences in terms of frame geometry and riding position that result from using the different handlebars.

Moustache’s decision in favour of a new drive system was the trigger for the redesign of the frame. The manufacturer is saying goodbye to the Bosch Active Line Plus and the Bosch Performance Line of its predecessors. Instead, it is switching to the Bosch Performance Line SX with the corresponding Bosch CompactTube 400 intube battery. Meanwhile, numerous manufacturers rely on this combination for comparable ebikes. Just two examples are the new Cube Nuroad Hybrid and the KTM Macina Revelator SX. Due to its compact dimensions, low weight and sufficient power with a torque of 55 Newton metres and power peaks of up to 600 watts, the drive is actually ideally suited for this type of application.

Efficiency beats practicality

In the course of integration, Moustache has realised its own ideas of optimal integration. The result is a completely customised interface for mounting the motor in the frame. It ensures that the battery is positioned as close as possible to the bottom bracket, i.e. very low in the down tube. The manufacturer hopes that this will improve the transmission of power while pedalling.

This design results in a circumstance that not all of you will like. The battery can only be removed for servicing purposes. Charging must therefore take place directly on the ebike. You can access the battery charging socket via a flap that can be opened on the motor cover.

Different requirements covered

What also connects the Moustache Dimanche 28 Road with the Moustache Dimanche 29 Gravel is the strikingly wide range of derailleur gears with which the manufacturer equips the respective models. You have the choice of a basic but very solid Shimano Cues with ten gears, a Sram Apex with twelve gears or an electronic version of the Sram drivetrain. You don’t see that every day. However, we have to put the brakes on the euphoria a little. The selection is firmly linked to specific models. In other words, unlike with Orbea, you can’t choose between several derailleur systems for a single model and thus ultimately influence the purchase price. As with the derailleur gears, the brakes used are from Shimano and Sram. Almost all rotors measure 160 millimetres in diameter. The only exception is the 180 millimetre rotors on the front brake of the Shimano MT200 on models with flat handlebars.

With the Bosch PowerMore 250, you can increase the range of the drive by around 60 per cent across all versions.

Moustache Dimanche 28 Road: At home on the tarmac

So much for the similarities. Understandably, there are also a number of details that separate the e-road bike from the e-gravel bike. The Dimanche 28 Road requires the right components and parts to enable you to speed across the tarmac. For example, you can enjoy narrower rims. These are fitted with road-ready tyres from Hutchinson and Schwalbe with a width of 34 millimetres to 38 millimetres. However, only the Schwalbe Pro One tyres are virtually treadless. For the top model in the range, the Dimanche 28 Road 6, Moustache has even opted for a carbon wheelset. This is one reason why the weight of the model has been reduced to 16 kilograms.

Three models of the Moustache Dimanche 28 Road are available on the market. Flat bars or drop bars, trapezoidal frame (called ‘Open’ at Moustache) or diamond frame – the variations have already been mentioned. There are also different operating concepts for the ebike system. Moustache Dimanche 29 Gravel: From off-road to road to work and back again

As an ebike that you can take off the road and onto forest paths or even unpaved terrain with a calm conscience, the Dimanche 29 Gravel features some different specifications. This includes a special suspension system. The suspended dropper seatpost is just one component.

The other can be found in the stem. There is a suspension system that can yield by a maximum of 20 millimetres. This means that it absorbs micro-vibrations and not massive impacts. Nevertheless, you will feel the effect, especially on long distances or rough surfaces. The vibrations are transmitted to the hands, wrists, arms and shoulders much less. This not only feels more comfortable, but also allows your muscles to fatigue later than usual. Moustache provides little information about this anti-shock stem on its website or in the press material. It is presumably a similar product to the Shockstop System from Redshift. With this, the damping effect can be regulated by inserting different elastomers. In any case, this is a useful feature that only selected manufacturers fit as standard.

Further riding comfort comes from the 50 millimetre wide tyres. With the Maxxis Rambler, Moustache has chosen a very versatile model. Its tread is not too aggressive, so that you can roll over smooth surfaces and not too moderate, so that you can still find traction on gravel, in wet conditions and in mud.

The last decisive point that sets the Dimanche 29 Gravel apart from its road-orientated counterpart is the greater breadth of the model range. Moustache has added two fully equipped ebikes to the range. This is indicated by the addition of ‘EQ’ in the product name. The equipment includes mudguards, rear racks, fixed lights and a kickstand. This expands the range of uses and makes the duo candidates for basically everything you can do with a bike, from everyday life to leisure and holidays.
