There are many ways to approach something new. For example, with the help of language. In the case of the fundamentally revised Explore E+ from Giant, this is actually quite revealing. The model series for the 2023 season bears the following subtitle: “Treking goes Adventure”. This raises a few questions: Was trekking not an adventure until now? Does the Explore now want to be called a trekking bike or an adventure bike? What is suddenly so adventurous about trekking with a bike? Let’s see if we can find an answer to this and other questions.
After all, Giant is not leaving us alone in our search. In its press release, the manufacturer reveals how it understands the slogan. “By making fundamental adjustments to the frame and the components installed, we were not only able to increase riding comfort, but also expand the range of use in the direction of adventure and increase riding safety even off paved roads,” says Alexander Gebert, Head of Product Department Giant Germany. What can be learned from this? Apparently something has changed in terms of geometry and ebike system that points in the direction of a new off-road capability.
Rides differently because you sit on it differently
A look at the technical features confirms this assumption. Giant has made a number of small adjustments that put you in a riding position that makes you sit more upright than on previous models. A handlebar is mounted on the stem, which is set at a steeper angle, has a larger rise and is flared further back in your direction. In addition, the top tube has lost a few millimetres in length. This makes the front area of the ebike more compact and everything becomes a little closer together. This gives you a better overview of the terrain ahead and more control over the bike itself.
In addition to the changed geometry, the tyres have gained width and now measure an impressive 57 millimetres. In addition, the suspension fork has increased its travel by 20 millimetres. Altogether, this gives the Explore E+ a noticeably new character. It is better equipped for the case that you want to leave the asphalt behind and rather seek adventure on forest and meadow paths.
Powerful and enduring
The updated motorisation of the model series follows the same line. All models provide a little more torque than before, and those with “Pro” in the product name feature a larger battery capacity on top of that. Both the Explore E+ Pro 0 and the Explore E+ Pro 1 are equipped with the SyncDrive Pro2, which was tuned last year. The Explore E+ 1 and Explore E+ 2 have a SyncDrive Sport2. In terms of power, both motors are very close to each other. In terms of torque, the 85 Newton metres of the SyncDrive Pro2 are just ten less than the SyncDrive Sport2. Their maximum assistance is 400 percent in each case. In terms of weight, the two are separated by just 100 grams. With the help of the RideControl app, you can adjust the support levels and thus adapt the motor characteristics to your wishes.
We already mentioned the increase in capacity. However, it is reserved for the two top models. As with the new Stormguard E+, Giant uses its batteries with the latest cell technology. The EnergyPak Smart 800, developed in cooperation with Panasonic, is based on cells of size 22700. You can increase its capacity to a total of 1,050 watt hours with the optionally available range extender EnergyPak Plus. Under optimal conditions, Giant promises a range of more than 200 kilometres.
You won’t get quite that far with the Explore E+ 1 and Explore E+ 2 – at least not on a single charge. The two cheaper models get by with the EnergyPak Smart 625. However, it is also compatible with the EnergyPak Plus add-on battery.
Drive follows current trend
Compared to previous years, it is noticeable that Giant has sticked with derailleur gears, but has switched to a drivetrain with only one chainring. This is in line with what other manufacturers are doing on comparable models. Almost without exception, the groupsets are versions with Shimano’s Linkglide technology. These have been specifically designed for longer stability. Consequently, they weigh a little more than the respective counterpart without the “LG” abbreviation. However, given the higher loads that impact on the gears on an ebike, this is a step that many presumably rather welcome.
Unfortunately, you won’t be able to enjoy a Lingkglide group on the Explore E+ 2. Instead, the cheapest model in the range has an Alivio group with nine sprockets and a cassette, the range of which lags behind that of the other models.
Practical aspects taken into account
Experience shows that you don’t necessarily need a long bike ride to experience adventure. Everyday life also has a lot to offer. To make sure you can cope with it, the Giant Explore E+ comes with practical attachments such as mudguards, lights, rear carrier and side stand as standard. Accessories from the MIK HD system can be attached to the rear carrier. It is also approved for attaching a child seat and can carry a load of 27 kilograms. If you want to carry more than one child on your bike, you can consider a bicycle trailer. The necessary mount is integrated in the frame in the form of an M10 thread.
With regard to the available frame shapes, everything remains the same. For all models, you can choose between a diamond frame and a trapezoidal frame with a lowered top tube. The diamond frame is available in sizes M to XXL, the trapezoidal frame from S to XL.

Any feedback on winter performance – especially in snow? I live in a ski resort and while we have our bike trail plowed in winter I still need to have decent traction. Has anyone put studded tires on?
Hello,
You talk about attaching a trailer to carry children on the e bike – would that not invalidate the warranty?
Thanks
Sean
Hello Sean,
Usually, the use of a trailer does not cause any problems regarding the waranty. Many bikes, for example the new Orbea Diem, now have integrated specific mounts in the frame for the trailer coupling. If this is not the case, you can make do with axle extensions.

The only important thing is that you keep an eye on the maximum permissible total weight of the ebike. The trailer and the load it carries count towards this value for most bike manufacturers. Let’s take a lightweight urban ebike as an example, which weighs only 16 kilograms and whose maximum permissible total weight ends at 120 kilograms. If we subtract the weight of the ebike and a rider weighing 80 kilograms from the 120 kilograms, only 24 kilograms remain that you are still allowed to pull with this ebike.

I have a Giant Explore E+1 from ‘22. This new version corrects most of what’s wrong with mine. Suspension, geometry, tyres, gears – I found the problems after a month’s ownership and use so why couldn’t they have got it right last year!
I’ve changed the gearing and will change it further. I’ll put fatter tyres on when OEM tyres wear out.
I agree with John above, regarding the max speed for assist. Redaktion is right about safety but say 40kmh isn’t too reckless. Cars are clearly different but ignoring them, all push bikes, even those without disk brakes, are allowed to go at any speed so why restrict e bikes to 25kmh. I’ve tried to hold my Giant at 30 on the flat but I can‘t do it for long Some younger fitter people might but…. I’ll be hacking mine when warranty is finished
Hello Richard,
Thank you for your insight. I do hope legislation will change, and ebikes will be allowed to support beyond 25km/h, without plates nor insurance, at least on roads.
Cheers,
Luca
ebikes are an awesome mode of transport until they cut out at 25km please!! Normal bike 50,60,70km…..no problem cars 60 80km no problem Usain bolt 37km people cheer,,, why the penalty for e bikes!! probably because if they were allowed to go even 40km everyone would ride them and the government and oil company’s and traffic fine revenue etc etc would be greatly reduced
Hello,
Maybe it’s more to do with security?
Usain Bolt: closed-off race track without any oncoming traffic, limited to 100 metres
Cars: seat belts, crumple zone, airbag, reinforced passenger cell
Bicycle: at best, voluntarily worn bicycle helmet and hopefully two well-functioning brakes
Cheers, Matthias

I don’t see all these colors available on the Giant side. Is this available in Europe only?
Hello Blake,
Seems you are right. I had check for myself first to make sure. But yes, on the US site there are less clolours on display compared for instance to the German one.
Cheers, Matthias
Happy to see these Ebikes progress in the manner they are. Makes a huge difference in a lot of people’s lives. hoping that they become so affordable that thieves don’t consider them to be worth it. Nice bike, I like it.
I’m impressed with the evolution of the eMotocycles. Its longer-range Explore E+ gives riders the freedom to ride farther with its Energy Pak Smart battery. Great bike.
