Welcome to the Circle: Polestar Also Wants to Build Its Own E-Bike

The next car manufacturer is getting serious and pushing its involvement in the ebike sector. The latest name on the list of manufacturers who, in addition to their core competence on four wheels, also want to boost business on two wheels is Polestar. Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of the Swedish company, recently announced to the US magazine “The Verge” that they are pushing ahead with plans for an electrically assisted bicycle.

All signs indicate that Polestar will actively participate in the development and production. In the conversation with “The Verge”, Ingenlath explicitly emphasised that he rejects a licensing deal. In such a model, the bike is created under the direction of one or more manufacturers from the bicycle industry, while the car producer only adds his label to the whole thing in the end. “I always hated that marketing stunt of buying a bike and then just putting your brand on it,” Ingenlath said literally.

First experiences existing

This summer, Polestar has already proven that such words are indeed followed by corresponding deeds. There is already a first Polestar bicycle. To be more precise, it is the Polestar Edition of the Allebike Alpha. Allebike, also based in Sweden, released a special limited edition of 100 of its Alpha mountain bike a few months ago. “This frame is actually our own frame,” Ingenlath now revealed.

Perhaps the Alpha will serve as a template for Polestar’s upcoming ebike. If so, then we could all be in for something very classy. The Alpha’s carbon frame, for example, is made using EPS technology. In this process, every single layer of carbon fabric is inserted into the tool by hand. Even the complete assembly is done entirely by hand at Allebike. Incidentally, Öhlins, a third player from Sweden, is part of this project. It contributed its TTX1Air shock with 120 millimetres of travel and the RXF34 m.2 29 Air Suspension fork with 130 millimetres of travel. Selected elements of the suspension are painted in the colour Swedish gold. Polestar usually adds this to the performance package of its cars.

The special edition of the Allebike Alpha appeared in only two colours: Snow and Space. Both can be chosen as the paint finish for the Polestar 2. The car manufacturer sold the mountain bikes exclusively online via its website. Everything seems to be out of stock there at the moment. On the Allebike website, there are still a few bikes with the dark Space paint.

From Polestar’s point of view, cars and bikes complement each other quite well in everyday life.

Good connections in the world of e-mobility on two wheels

Anyone who has ever seen the inside of a Polestar showroom might also have spotted the second cooperation that the Volvo subsidiary has with another player in the field of electromobility. Since 2019, Polestar has been presenting electric motorbikes from Cake. And once again, two Swedish companies are making common cause. A special version of the Cake Makka can not only be transported on a specially developed carrier with a Polestar, but can even be charged via its battery. Polestar and Cake had introduced this concept of Drive & Ride in order to keep inner cities car-free and to relieve public transport.

Considering these existing partnerships, the following profile emerges for a potential Polestar ebike:

• distribution online and via showrooms
