Last year, KTM was already extremely diligent when it came to introducing the Bosch Smart System into its range. For the integration of the PowerTube 750 battery, the manufacturer had even developed its own mounting plate in-house. This allowed for the use of existing frames and thus, at the end of the day, to be faster than other competitors.
KTM is benefiting from this lead this year as well. What else you need to know about the innovations from the Austrians, we summarise for you in all due brevity.
1. Change almost complete
2. Second attempt for ABS on the ebike
3. Smart theft protection
4. The only real newcomer
5. All model series at a glance
1. Change almost completed
When flicking through the catalogue, one immediately notices that Smart System seems to be written on every page. It’s quite possible that we won’t even have to comment on this next year when we review the bikes for the 2024 season, because by then no more bikes with older drive systems will be released. KTM has already completely converted its best-selling model series. This was only possible because Bosch has now greatly expanded the platform. Manufacturers no longer have just one motor, one battery and one display to choose from. This also means that the technical and price gradations within a model series work again. So you can already keep in mind: prominent model series such as Macina Prowler, Macina Kapoho, Macina Team or Macina Tour are only available with drives from the latest development stage from Bosch.
By no means to be put out to grass
This is the hour of the traditionalists and bargain hunters. Because every now and then, one of the old familiar systems with an Active Line Plus motor or a Purion display is still installed. Of necessity, the price has to be below the level of the rest of the range. And technically speaking, we are talking about very good components here. They just don’t have the interactivity of the Smart System. In the case of KTM, this applies mainly to the more simple hardtails of the Macina Race and Macina Ride model series. The e-mountain bikes are aimed at those who perhaps want to gain their first experience of off-road riding and for whom it doesn’t have to be the top motor with the biggest battery. In return, the prices are just below or above the 3,000 euro mark. In addition, there are individual models in other series. To complete the list, the children’s ebikes of the Macina Mini Me series are also mentioned here. However, the fact that no Smart System is used here is more due to the limited space of the small frames and the lower motor power that is appropriate for children.

2. Second attempt for ABS on the ebike
The aforementioned expansion of the Smart System is directly linked to two other topics that are reflected in KTM’s product range. The first is the fundamentally revised anti-lock braking system (ABS). Bosch had launched a first version of this in 2018. Now there is new version that has been much better integrated and includes fewer additional components. We can assume that KTM was able to get a comprehensive impression of the update in advance. Apparently this was quite convincing. Three model ranges each have a bike with ABS. Two of them are the top model of the respective series. With the Macina Aera, the Macina Style and the Macina Gran, the choice fell on an off-road SUV ebike with a low step-through, a very comfortable e-city bike and a model that copes well on both terrain.

- KTM Macina Aera 771 LFC ABS
- KTM Macina Style 720 ABS
- KTM Macina Gran 710 ABS
3. Smart theft protection
In addition to riding safety, the security of the bicycle against theft is playing a greater role for more and more cyclists. In response to this, Bosch has introduced the ConnectModule GPS tracker. With this device, you can protect your bike against theft. If that doesn’t help, it also offers the possibility to determine the position of the bike and pass this information on to the investigating authorities. KTM is initially installing the tracker on six selected models. That doesn’t sound like much. And it is. Presumably the manufacturer first wants to observe the feedback from customers and draw conclusions for the future.
KTM ebikes for the 2023 season with ConnectModule:
- KTM Macina Kapoho Prestige
- KTM Macina Team 791
- KTM Macina Aera 771 LFC
- KTM Macina Style 710
- KTM Macina Gran 710
- KTM Macina City 710 Belt
4. The only real newcomer
Considering this comprehensive technical change, it is almost a little surprising that KTM still found time to develop a new bike in addition. Whereby, the front part of the bike already existed. The Macina Multi CX is the longtail variant of the Macina Multi presented last year. Its extended rear triangle emphasises the character of an e-cargo bike more than was the case with the Macina Multi. Due to the change, the wheelbase has increased by about five centimetres. Just from the picture, we would have guessed more. This means that the overall length has increased by a similar amount. In terms of pleasant handling while riding as well as everyday use, this sounds like good news.
Bigger, but not stronger
The result of the extra length is simply more space. This can be used for loads with larger dimensions that previously did not fit on the Multi. Or you can attach two child seats to the rear carrier instead of one. However, you can’t carry more weight with it. As with the smaller counterpart, the maximum load is limited to 170 kilograms. No more than 80 kilograms of this may be related to the things or people you want to transport.
Consequently, KTM has equipped the Macina Multi CX with Bosch’s Smart System. The manufacturer combines the Performance Line CX motor with the new large frame battery, which has a capacity of 725 watt hours. Shimano’s Nexus hub gear system with five gears was chosen for the gears. It is driven by a low-maintenance Gates belt. The Multi CX thus follows the approach of the Multi Urban, while a derailleur is used on the “simple” Multi.
The somewhat different space miracle
KTM makes clever use of the space provided by the frame construction with its three parallel down tubes. The tubes form an intermediate space for which the manufacturer had a matching frame bag made of Cordura. The narrow but very long bag holds five litres. It is easy to reach even while riding and is predestined for temporarily stowing things like umbrellas, a bike lock or a wallet.
For everything else, KTM has plenty of accessories ready. These include additional bags of various sizes, a seat for the rear carrier and a carrier for snowboards and bicycles.

5.1 KTM Macina Prowler 2023
If you want to experience an ebike from KTM in its sportiest form, there’s no getting around the KTM Macina Prowler. The manufacturer has always tested its maximum with the Enduro e-MTB so that you can do the same later on the trails. This time, KTM is raising the level again with the top version – the KTM Macina Prowler Exonic. This is primarily due to the Bosch Performance Line CX Race. Bosch developed the motor especially for the professional teams of the Enduro World Series for e-mountain bikes (EWS-E). A few have also gone to production models and the Prowler is one of the lucky few.
Compared to the “standard” Bosch Performance Line CX for the Smart System, the Race version saves 150 grams in weight, increases the support power to 400 percent in Race riding mode and has a slightly extended boost. Visually, you can easily distinguish the pedigree top athlete from the other motors by its grey housing.
In the complete model range, it is noticeable that KTM now uses the large Bosch PowerTube with a capacity of 750 watt hours across all models. By the way, from the 2023 season, all models mean that the KTM Macina Prowler Pro has become the KTM Macina Prowler Elite. However, it is still the entry-level model in the range.

5.2 KTM Macina Kapoho 2023
More balance and less electronics than the Prowler? Then the KTM Macina Kapoho might be worth a look. The model series ranks only slightly below the Prowler, but offers more choice simply because of the carbon and aluminium frames. At the same time, the performance is absolutely respectable. With 160 millimetres of suspension travel for fork and shock, the chassis sets hardly any limits both uphill and downhill.
KTM has thinned out the model range somewhat. Two bikes have been dropped from the catalogue, so that you can now choose from a total of six different configurations.

5.3 KTM Macina Lycan 2023
The KTM Macina Lycan marks the beginning of the manufacturer’s range of full-suspension e-mountain bikes, among which there are bikes specially designed for women. With three out of a total of five models, they even make up the majority. You can always recognise them by the name “Glorious”. Regardless of this, the combination of an aluminium frame and a suspension travel of 140 millimetres front and rear should be interesting for many people. This means you can be both relaxed and sporty off the beaten track, without either feeling like an unsatisfactory compromise.
Our tip for those who can live with a slightly smaller battery: Check out the KTM Macina Lycan 571 Glorious. It has the smaller Bosch PowerTube with 500 watt hours of capacity. This is reflected in a slightly lower price.

5.4 KTM Macina Chacana 2023
While other manufacturers started quite early to equip full-suspension e-mountain bikes with full road-ready features, KTM takes a rather relaxed approach to this topic. Among the MTBs, the abbreviation LFC only appears on the KTM Macina Chacana. At KTM, this stands for “Light Fender Carrier”. On a bike like the Chacana, which also has its qualities as a touring bike, this equipment proves particularly helpful. In addition, there are three other versions of the model without these accessories.

- Maximum permitted total weight: from 144 kg
5.5 KTM Macina Team 2023
For the 2023 season, KTM has almost completely finished the switch to the Bosch Smart System. From now on, the manufacturer will hardly ever use older-generation drives. The cut this means for the range is most obvious in one of the best-selling models – the KTM Macina Team. While last year there were ten different configurations to choose from, the number is now down to seven.
From a technical point of view, only a few minor details have changed. Here a different rear derailleur, there a different suspension fork or different tyres. In terms of colour, there is more variety with the tones Sunset Matt for the KTM Macina Team 792 Glorious and the Macina Team 772 Glorious as well as Vital Blue for the Macina Team 691 and the Macina Team 671.
Interesting for all tall people among you: The model range also includes an XL model with a maximum permissible total weight of 178 kilograms.

- Maximum permitted total weight: from 125 kg
5.6 KTM Macina Race 2023
As a model with a Bosch drive that is not part of the Smart System family, the KTM Macina Race almost gains an exotic status. The combination of Performance Line CX motor, PowerTube 500 battery and Purion display already resonates a little nostalgia. Basically, however, these are enormously stable components that promise many years of unadulterated riding pleasure thanks to Bosch’s service promise. The moderate suspension travel of 100 millimetres for the suspension fork and the derailleur with nine gears allow you to go on extended tours on paved forest paths. The frame also has the necessary mounting points for mudguards and rear carriers. As a result, you can confidently tackle everyday cycling in an urban environment with these bikes as well.

- Maximum permitted total weight: from 141 kg
5.7 KTM Macina Ride 2023
The KTM Macina Ride and KTM Macina Race clearly share more similarities than differences. The Ride has a Bosch Active Line Plus motor, which is generally considered to be quite energy-efficient. Accordingly, you get a lot of range out of the 500 watt hours of battery capacity. The rest of the equipment is largely the same as on the KTM Macina Ride. The integration of the battery shows that this frame has been on the market for a while. On the other hand, the prices are lower than for almost any other KTM ebike.

5.8 KTM Macina Mini Me 2023
Because there are many things that are even more fun when shared with the whole family, KTM was one of the first manufacturers to develop special ebikes for children several years ago. On these, less powerful motors are combined with components that are primarily designed for high durability and less for minimal weight. The KTM Macina Mini Me 561 with 26-inch wheels is already in its third revision, just like the KTM Macina Mini Me 441 with 24-inch wheels.

5.9 KTM Macina Aera 2023
Bosch caused quite a stir last year with its completely revised version of the anti-lock braking system for ebikes. Since the system is supplied exclusively directly to bicycle manufacturers and cannot be retrofitted privately, ebikes with ABS immediately came into sharper focus. The top model in the KTM Macina Aera range, the KTM Macina Aera 771 LFC ABS, has this extra safety feature.
Basically, the Aera models like to polarise a little because KTM considers them to be mountain bikes with a low entry. With a suspension travel of 100 millimetres, wide lugged tyres and, in some cases, derailleurs with eleven gears, some details speak for this view. Especially the versions without mudguards and rear carriers live up to this claim. The fact that the others also have their fans is underlined not least by test wins at Stiftung Warentest and comparable media.

5.10 KTM Macina Cross 2023
Even before gravel bikes became the latest trend in cycling, the cross bike had long been a bike that combined sporty riding on and off the road. KTM continues to remain faithful to this all-rounder. The KTM Macina Cross is suitable for bike tours where you want to switch from asphalt to forest and gravel paths at any time. It can even be used for longer adventure trips. Two of the five models in the range are already equipped by default with mudguards and lights. The others, of course, also have the necessary mounts, so you can prepare them for all-weather use later on. With the KTM Macina Cross 510, one version is also available as a low-step model. For all others, the choice is limited to a diamond or trapezoidal frame. With the KTM Macina Cross P510 Street, you will encounter one of the few ebikes from the manufacturer for the current season with a Bosch second development stage drive.

5.11 KTM Macina Sport 2023
As a classic trekking ebike, the KTM Macina Sport is one of the models with which the manufacturer underlines its core competence year after year. A fully equipped ebike with high-quality components, the most powerful Bosch ebike system, a fork with moderate suspension travel and the possibility to carry quite a bit of luggage, which proves to be just as advantageous on bike tours lasting several days as in everyday life. This year, the manufacturer has once again upgraded the top model of the series. Shifting on the KTM Macina Sport 710 is now electronic thanks to the Sram GX AXS. In addition, there are sportier wheels and a new tyre, the Schwalbe G-One Overland, which has shown excellent performance in the gravel sector. In addition, you will find bikes with three different battery sizes in this model range, so that you can choose according to your requirements.

- Maximum permitted total weight: from 143 kg
5.12 KTM Macina Style 2023
For those for whom cycling is primarily a matter of indulgence and comfort, the KTM Macina Style is probably the best choice. Compared to the KTM Macina Sport, the manufacturer has set a slightly different focus here. Suspension seat posts and adjustable stems are designed to make finding the right position on the bike even easier, so that the riding pleasure lasts just as long as your own physical condition. This is particularly true of the KTM Macina Style XL, which, with a maximum permissible total weight of 170 kilograms, is explicitly designed for tall people with a higher body weight.
Apart from that, the model range leaves hardly any wish unfulfilled. KTM equips all variants with the Linkglide groupset from Shimano. Its robustness ensures consistently reliable shifting and withstands the higher loads on an ebike longer than any other Shimano group. The KTM Macina Style 720 ABS is another ebike with the Bosch anti-lock braking system.
Models
- Name: Macina Style 710, Macina Style XL, Macina Style 720 ABS, Macina Style 720, Macina Style 730, Macina Style 740

- Maximum permitted total weight: from 146 kg
5.13 KTM Macina Tour 2023
Compared to last year, the KTM Macina Tour is hardly recognisable. For this model series, KTM has completely abandoned Bosch’s second development stage drives and consistently switched to the Smart System. This is probably one reason why only three of the five equipment variants remain. However, KTM has retained the basic character of this mid-range trekking ebike. In addition to the road-ready full equipment, the e-drive offers a wider selection of different motors, battery sizes and displays. After all, not all of you need an identical setup or want to invest the same amount of money.

- Maximum permitted total weight: 146 kg
5.14 KTM Macina Fun 2023
More fun – who doesn’t want that in their life? KTM has apparently taken this literally and expanded the Fun mini model series from one to two versions. With the new top model, the KTM Macina Fun P610, the Smart System also makes its debut. Visually, the frame battery mounted on the down tube may not be to everyone’s taste. However, for an entry into the trekking segment, the technical equipment with a Linkglide groupset from Shimano as well as a dropper seatpost and adjustable stem are absolutely worth considering.

5.15 KTM Macina Gran 2023
With the ebikes, which KTM has primarily designed for riding in urban environments, you will encounter the next bike with ABS. The most exclusive model series in this respect is the KTM Macina Gran. And its most noble version has the aforementioned anti-lock braking system. Oddly, there is no model of the KTM Macina Gran 710 ABS with a trapezoidal frame. We are talking about the same frame on which the KTM Macina Style is based, for example. Therefore, our tip: KTM Macina Gran 710 ABS and KTM Macina Style 720 ABS are almost identical. However, the Style has the trapezoidal frame and is also 200 euros cheaper.
Apart from that, KTM has diversified the Gran over a total of five models, so there is enough variety.

5.16 KTM Macina City 2023
From the pleasantly upright seating position on the bike, from which you can keep a good eye on the traffic around you, to the suspension seatpost and the adjustable stem, the KTM Macina City is similar to the KTM Macina Gran in many respects. Instead of derailleur gears, however, the manufacturer uses hub gears – either the Enviolo TR or the Shimano Nexus 5. You drive the hub gears via a Gates carbon belt or a conventional chain. The frame shapes are dominated by those with a low step-in. Alternatively, you can choose a diamond frame for the KTM Macina City 710 Belt and the KTM Macina City 610 Belt. Another XL model is also worth mentioning, whose maximum permitted total weight exceeds that of the other bikes by more than 20 kilograms.

5.17 KTM Macina Central 2023
KTM will continue to offer the low-step model with semi-integrated frame battery in the 2023 season. And apparently for a few years beyond that. Otherwise, the manufacturer would probably have refrained from switching to the Bosch Smart System and the associated development of a new frame. But in the region from the bottom bracket to the battery, the clearer lines and the somewhat slimmer design are very noticeable. Motor, battery and display are chosen to match the entry into the segment. And, of course, a version with a coaster brake for the hub gears is not to be missed.
