Allegedly, the sheet of paper on which Moustache wrote down the ideas for his first cargo bike was absolutely blank. Maybe that was the case. Probably, however, the catalogues of the competitors were lying all around or they were present in the minds of the developers. This is because the completely new Lundi 20 by Moustache doesn’t seem all that new. Rather, as if one had already encountered it – which need not be a disadvantage.
In fact, the French manufacturer is breaking new ground. For the first time, the folks from the Vosges are presenting a cargo bike. From city ebikes to various e-mountain bikes, road bikes, gravel bikes and tandems with electric assistance to the inevitable trekking ebike, everything can already be found in their range. Now the Lundi 20 closes one of the last gaps.
No easy naming
Moustache has opted for a longtail, i.e. a bike with an extended rear section on which you can stow most of your transport goods. In terms of names, the manufacturer is always a little challenged. Traditionally, the names of the models are based on the names of the days of the week. So, if you want to sell more than seven different types of bicycles, you have to come up with something.
Moustache has skilfully manoeuvred itself out of this little predicament. And in many respects. They have taken up a name in a slightly different form that they have been using for a long time. The Lundi was one of the models of the manufacturer’s very first bikes. In its current version it is called Lundi 27.
Role model from their own ranks
The decision to use Lundi 20 as the title for the new e-cargo bike was by no means arbitrary. Rather, both bikes share a common design language. For example, the Lundi 20 has inherited the characteristic handlebars, the preference for straight lines and the conspicuously angular frame tubes from its optical model. The frame is also made of the same high-performance aluminium with an identical triple cavity tube construction.
With regard to the frame size, there is another parallel. Both the Lundi 20 and Lundi 27 represent the one-size-fits-all approach. This means that the bike is available in only one frame size. Their geometry should ensure that people of different sizes can ride the bike similarly well. In the case of the newcomer, Moustache names a range of 155 centimetres to 190 centimetres as the body length to which this should apply.
A bike to tackle
In terms of load capacity, the Lundi 20 naturally comes out on top in the comparison. You can weigh up to 200 kilograms together with the bike and the entire cargo you want to transport. The Lundi 20 weighs between 31 and 33 kilograms, depending on the equipment. All in all, this is a value that qualifies the vehicle, which is only 185 centimetres long, as a fully-fledged cargo bike. This leaves quite a few kilograms, even if the rider weighs 90 kilograms or more.
The Lundi 20 should be correspondingly versatile in everyday use. A lot of things that are a bit bigger and heavier and need to be moved from A to B can be put on this bike. Of course, there is also space for children and even adults on the rear carrier. More about that later. Lundi, in French Monday, is a really good name for a bicycle that can be used for a lot of things. At the beginning of the week, many people have a lot on their to-do list. This bike could be very useful for getting some of these things done.
Learning without copying
One reason for this, however, is that Moustache seems to have taken a close look at what cyclists appreciate about cargo bikes which are already on the market. In our opinion, the GSD from the Asian cargo bike specialist Tern was the prime model. Especially the rear triangle with the massive rear carrier, the railing and the blinded rear wheel are very reminiscent of the bike that was redesigned last year. For example, the Lundi 20 can be parked upright on the rear carrier just like the GSD. This may save space when parking the bike in your shed or make it easier to manoeuvre it into a lift to get to the next railway track.
Unmistakably, Moustache also modifies existing solutions. For example, the manufacturer has virtually covered the rear carrier with MIK retaining plates. Thanks to the plates, a child seat can be installed in different positions on the rear carrier – either further away from the rider or closer to him. The same applies to other attachments that are compatible with the MIK HD standard. Overall, the length of the rear carrier is sufficient to place two child seats one behind the other.
Sometimes better, sometimes worse than the competition
The carrier is equipped with a railing that encloses the cargo area as a protective bar and with running boards that extend over the entire length. Both are standard equipment. This is a clear advantage compared to competitors such as Tern and Co. Both the railing and the boards can of course be removed if necessary. Important to know: A maximum load of 70 kilograms is allowed on the rear carrier. If the maximum permitted total weight provides in your case more options, you would have to store the remaining things elsewhere on the bike. The front carrier is ideal for this. The corresponding mounts are integrated into the front of the head tube.
In terms of riding comfort, the Lundi doesn’t quite keep up with what the competition offers. The telescopic seatpost with its 40 millimetres of suspension travel and the remote control on the handlebars are definitely a step in the right direction. The same goes for the 20-inch wheels. With their full width of 60 millimetres, the tyres are another element that can compensate for annoying vibrations. Unfortunately, only the two top models of the Lundi 20 are equipped with Schwalbe Pick-Up. The other models have Kenda tyres with 58 millimetres. These are designed for a somewhat lower total load and do not offer the high-quality puncture protection that the Pick-Up does. However, neither the Schwalbe nor the Kenda are a substitute for a suspension fork, as you will find on the GSD from Tern, for example.
High-quality drive
There are no compromises when it comes to the electric drive. The Cargo Line motor from Bosch is justifiably one of the best you can expect from an e-bike. Its gently controlled form of support, together with the crisp torque of 85 Newton metres, is unmatched by any other motor in this segment. The Bosch PowerPack battery with a capacity of 500 watt hours and the Intuvia display complete the electric component of the drive. Two of the four models of the Lundi 20 are available with a second battery as standard.
You can choose between classic derailleur gears from Shimano or stepless automatic gears in the rear hub from Enviolo. The derailleur is a single speed drive with ten sprockets. The cassette offers a range of 11 to 46 teeth and should thus fit similarly well as the Enviolo. For the bikes that rely on automatics, the Gates belt drive adds a feel-good factor for those who are not fans of extended bike maintenance.
The new quartet
The Lundi 20 range thus comprises four models in total. Distinguishing between them is relatively easy. You can choose between the two gearing variants. Once you have decided, you can choose whether you want to cycle with one or two batteries as standard. The price starts at 4,599 euros and goes up to 6,599 euros for the top model, the Lundi 20.5 Dual.
Attach, click, strap on
Moustache’s novelty also earns further bonus points with its wide range of accessories. Bags in various sizes, boxes, baskets, straps – there’s a lot to choose from.
- The child seat from Urban IKI costs around 100 euros and is approved for children up to six years old.
- Those who have outgrown the child seat can sit in a simpler seat for older children and adults. The backrest of this seat can be folded down to increase the seating area.
- An additional bar can be mounted as a handle on the rear carrier behind the seat post.
- Made of durable, 100 percent waterproof material, Moustache offers a backpack, smaller and large panniers. The large pannier, Clémentine, has a volume of 45 litres and can carry 15 kilograms of weight. You can also buy it separately.
- A set of straps is also included in the accessories. You can use them to … tie things down. Logical.
- There is an additional bar for the rear carrier. It can be attached to the railing of the protective bar and separates the rear carrier into two sections. A Euro crate, for example, fits in front of it, which then stays in place and doesn’t slip during the ride.
- You can mount a smaller and a larger front rack on the head tube. Both can carry a load of 15 kilograms.
- There is also a basket and a box for the front. To use these, however, you need the matching front carrier.
According to Moustache, the Lundi 20 will be available from January 2022.
